A career in teaching

Pursuing a career in Teaching requires one to specialize in combination of a subject(s), such as Biology, Chemistry, Kiswahili, English or Physics.  A teachers help students prepare for life after school. They teach academic lessons and various skills that students will need for further education, or to attend college and finally to enter the job market. Teachers work in either public or private schools depending on their desire and other issues surrounding the area they come from.

One good thing about being a teacher is seeing students develop new skills and gain an appreciation for knowledge and learning.  Teachers work in school for hours or when they are required to teach their subject and this may vary from school to school. Teachers may also spend time in the evenings and on weekends in marking and grading papers and preparing lessons. Additionally, they may meet with parents, students, and other teachers before and after school. Plus, teachers who coach sports or advise clubs generally do so before or after school.

To start up your career in Education & Teaching field one needs to enroll for a course in one of the teacher education programs, and learn how to present information to students and how to work with students of varying abilities and backgrounds. The academic programs typically include fieldwork, such as teaching practice while majoring in the subject of teaching. The subject areas will depend on the program chosen from among listed below. One can pursue a degree or a degree in each programme depending on one’s qualification after completing their education in high school.  

Duties of a teacher

The duties of a teacher normally may include the following:

  • Plan lessons in the subjects they teach, such as biology or history
  • Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses
  • Teach students as an entire class or in small groups
  • Grade students’ assignments to monitor progress
  • Communicate with parents about students’ progress
  • Work with individual students to challenge them, to improve their abilities, and to work on their weaknesses
  • Prepare students for standardized tests required by the state
  • Develop and enforce classroom rules
  • Supervise students outside of the classroom—for example, at lunchtime or during outdoor activities like sports and athletics
